Well, I finished up my second year at UF this past Thursday. Fortunately, my three exams went pretty well so it felt good ending on a high note! I’ve spent the past couple days cleaning up the apartment for the summer and getting ready to head back to Orlando. Katie, my older sister, is graduating tomorrow from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a degree in Spanish! Seems kind of weird to think that she is done with college and I’m about half way! Time is just flying by!

Now that its summer, its time to start working again! FINALLY! I’m ready to start making good money again! I start doing an internship on May 11th at Lockheed Martin and I’m so excited! I’m sure I’ll write more about that as the summer progresses.

That’s all for now folks!

UPDATE: Turns out the blank text messages I have been receiving are because of some updates that T-Mobile has recently done to their voice mail system. Apparently, the iPhone now interprets the information from T-Mobile about the voice mail status as blank text messages. Its a little annoying I guess but I can live with it since I have an unlocked phone and I don’t pay crazy fees to AT&T every month. If you want to read more about the problem, you can read this thread over at hackint0sh.org

This morning I received a blank text message on my iPhone! Not sure what was going on but the message showed up blank and without a number. The picture below shows what I’m talking about. Strangely enough, notice the date for the message. It’s not 2012 and it’s not 9:11 PM! I’m assuming it was my phone freaking out and not the cell network but it was definitely a weird occurrence!

I’ve had my Gmail account for about 4 years now and so I get a decent amount of spam. My address has been around long enough and used to sign up for various things that I average about 50 spam messages a day. Fortunately, Gmail does an excellent job of filtering the spam so I don’t ever have to look at it. I was deleting the spam though and noticed this message. Quite an elobrate message and strange to see the effort that someone went to making this:

Mrs. Ruth Madoff

West, Liverpool,

London.

My Great Compliments,

I’m Mrs. Ruth Madoff, 67, wife to Mr. Bernard L. Madoff, of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC, who pleaded guilty to operating a multibillion-dollar Ponzi scheme, is worth up to $826 million, according to a document filed with a federal court on Friday 13th March 2009.

My husband pleading stealing billions from investment from his clients and he was ordered to jail Thursday 12th March 2009, after pleading guilty to all 11 criminal counts in one of Wall Street’s biggest swindles.

Now the Federal investigators in the USA are working around the clock to freeze all my assets, fearing that I’m trying to flee the country which I have done shortly after my husband was sentenced, I have $93 million in my name beyond their reach.

The Securities and Exchange Commission is working with federal prosecutors in Manhattan to prepare a filing asking a judge to formally freeze all of my assets as soon as possible.

My husband deposited the sum of (USD$17.000.000.00 Million) in a Finance Firm in Europe some years ago in my name, I need you to collect this funds and distribute it to both of us since the Federal investigators are working around the clock to freeze all my assets. Meanwhile all documents related to transfer of this fund to your account is with my attorney Mr. Peter Chavkin, who is willing to help us process the release order from the UK bank.

Presently, I’m in a hard out here in UK as the Federal investigators as well the Securities and Exchange Commission is looking for me to freeze my entire asset as well prosecute me like my husband.

Please reply back to me on this e-mail as I will like if you contact my attorney directly so that he will direct you on the way forward. Please due send to me all your contact details as I will like to speak with you before we commence on the transaction.

Please keep this confidential. You can read my story on this website: http://www.nypost.com/seven/03152009/news/regionalnews/ruth_in_crosshair_159631.htm

God bless you.

Best Regards,

Mrs. Ruth Madoff

Bizarre! I wonder how many people respond to this stuff and think it is legitimate? I really have not ever understood spam since the majority of messages are completely retarded and don’t make any sense. There must be some point to spam though since spammers continue to send these messages like crazy. There are some interesting statistics on spam here that indicate that about 75% of email messages are spam! What a waste!

I personally enjoy cooking a fair amount. Nothing hits the spot quite like a nicely cooked meal to help alleviate the stresses of the college lifestyle. Naturally, if one eats a lot of crappy food then they will start to feel crappy so I make sure to cook myself a number of good meals each week. I enjoy cooking a lot of different meats but am a little limited so I don’t have a grill. I really wish I had a big grill to cook steaks and grill fish on but I guess I’ll just have to wait until I get a house of my own. Even though I don’t have a grill, I’ve been able to do a lot with the broil setting on our oven in order to get some nicely “grilled” meat.

Last night, I decided to make some Spicy Beef Skewers. It was a pretty simple recipe and it yielded some greaty results!

I first mixed up a marinade that consisted of some Terayaki sauce, soy sauce, olive oil, a little vegetable oil and some crushed red peppers. I marinated some chunks of beef in the sauce for about 15 minutes while I cut up a nice onion. I kind of wish I liked more vegetables like red and green peppers since those would have been a nice addition to the receipe. Anyways, I then poked the meet and onions on to some bamboo skewers and put them on a rack to broil. It only took about 10 or 15 minutes to cook them thoroughly and get them to the point where they looked nicely crisped.

Pretty simple receipe that went nicely with some hot white rice! They definitely had a nice tang to them and I made enough to last for two meals so I’m pretty content. And to think that everyone talks about eating bad in college. Not me!

I woke up extra early this morning (aka 9:30AM…I love being a college student) to buy tickets to the U2 concert in Tampa! Now I don’t have hundreds of dollars to spend so I was hoping to get tickets for one of the upper levels where I would still get a good view.

I refreshed the Ticketmaster page at 10AM on the dot and the ordering form appeared instantly. I did a search for tickets in the $55 price range and it offered general admission tickets on the field. I didn’t really want these tickets since I wanted a guaranteed seat since I probably won’t be able to get there 8 hours early to wait for the best spot on the field! I then did the ticket search a couple more times and was finally able to get two good seats on the Upper level for Mich and I. I think they will be pretty good seats and they were affordable for me at least.

I’m so excited! I’ve wanted to see U2 for a long time but they haven’t been touring while working on their last album. Unfortunately I now have to wait 6 months since the concert is October 9th! Oh well! I think this will be my first real concert in a stadium. Its gonna be amazing!

Windows 7 should be coming out sometime this year from what I’ve read on various technology blogs and because of that I am extremely excited! I have been running the Windows 7 Public Beta on my HP dv6000 laptop for a few months now and I’m loving it! I have found that it is considerably faster than Vista in a number of ways. It boots up faster, switches users faster and browses files a whole lot faster.

Now I know its not a whole lot to be excited about, but the main thing that has made me the happiest is faster network browsing! Yes, I know, small little improvement but the speed of browsing files stored on a my network is considerably faster. Windows XP used to take forever to “explore” the network if you tried to browse by Workgroup and always seemed to have troubles accessing various computers over my wireless network. Windows Vista was a bit faster and was much better at discovering the computers on a network. It would still tend to hang occasionally as it tried to load folders from networked computers especially if they had a lot files. Now, Windows 7! MAN! It is fast at browsing my network and makes it much easier to access files across the network. It copies large files much more efficiently over the wireless too and never hangs when exploring folders.

Thank you Windows team for speeding up the networking features on Windows 7!!

The alliteration in the title of this post says it all…sort of. I am in the market for a car and have been keeping tabs on Craigslist for the past month. I probably won’t actually buy a car until after the summer or even November but I am still looking around and getting a feel for prices.

The point is, please post pictures of cars that you are selling! I have seen so many Craigslist postings where people are trying to sell a car for thousands of dollars but can’t even manage to post pictures! If someone is going to make a large purchase like a car they probably want to see some pictures of the thing. I just thought this was kind of an obvious fact that one should post pictures when posting an item for sale. Its not like it costs any money to post pictures since there are hundreds of free photo sharing sites like Photobucket and Flickr.

I’ll admit that some people at least try to post pictures. Unfortunately these pictures were taken with some junk 1 megapixel camera built into their Razr flip-phone that they purchased in 2004. Epic FAIL. So the point is, please post good pictures of cars that you would like to actually have a shot at selling!! Otherwise your posting is about as useful as a classified ad in the newspaper. The whole point of the internet nowadays is the easy sharing of multimedia so post up some good lookin’ photos of the car that you are thinking about selling if you are going to make a listing on Craigslist!

/rant

Thunderstorms are amazing to watch and listen to. Fortunately, living in Florida, I get to see and experience a good number of these every year! The shear power of these storms is incredible and the way they develop is amazing. Lightning is also a rather remarkable phenomenon that is just unbelievable. Did you know that lightning can reach temperatures of 50000 degrees Fahrenheit? That is four times the temperature on the surface of the SUN! It is rather incredible to think that people get struck by lightning and still survive somehow.

The loud trickle of rain on my window combined with flashes of lightning every few minutes and huge booms of thunder is just incredible. Its almost as if the rain is rolling through late on Saturday night so as to ‘clean’ the remnants of the previous week and make way for the fresh week ahead by purifying the air and bringing a nice swath of cold air.

Check out this doppler radar picture of what is hitting Gainesville right now!

It is just incredible to see the size of these storms and the power contained within them. Seeing these big bolts of lightning and hearing the thunder can really make one feel powerless. In my opinion and experience, these huge systems of storms just point to the existance of a greater power that is in control of everything.

I have always been a pretty good worker and good at getting things done. I always get things done in time and don’t have any trouble getting my homework done by the due date. Recently, I have been rather unproductive. I still get all my work done but I’ve become pretty good at wasting away time sitting on the computer.

I’ve always read on Lifehacker about the various things that people do in order to get things done. You can read about the various methods here if you want. I love reading the things posted on Lifehacker everyday.

I have started using Post-It notes to create lists of things that need to get done in a given day. Yes, I know, that doesn’t sound like much of a system of getting things done but it really worked for me yesterday. I had a couple things I needed to do which I put on my list but then I stretched myself and added a few additional things. It felt great crossing off the things as I finished them. I managed to get all the stuff done and more in a shorter amount of time than it would have taken me without the list. All in all, it feels great being productive and sometimes you just need a small motivator to help things along.
